Celebrating the fervour of poker in India, Asia’s largest offshore gaming and entertainment destination Deltin Royale, Goa is all set to host, once again, India’s most sought-after live poker event, ‘Deltin Poker Tournament’, better known amongst the poker enthusiasts as ‘DPT’. The tournament will begin today (April 14th) and conclude by April 19th. 2022.

Team G2G caught up with Praveen Dwarakanath (PD), head of Poker - Deltin for an exclusive interview to understand the response to DPT, Deltin poker plans for the year.

G2G: This is the first tournament after Covid19 restrictions are lifted. How was the response so far?

PD: The response and the experience have been great! As far as poker is concerned, people have had to stick to the online mode for too long; so, it’s been exciting for them as well to be able to play in a live setting; and when the venue is as grand as ‘Deltin Royale’, it adds a great deal to the overall experience. Even online players are now looking forward to playing live so we have been able to get them on the felts too. Not only for us or for poker, the thrill of all games is 10x more after a two-year restriction! It’s different when you choose to play live versus when you have to play online – so the excitement shows in the footfalls!

G2G: Can you take us through the tournament format.

PD: Deltin Poker Tournament is India’s most sought-after live poker event, better known amongst the poker enthusiasts as ‘DPT’. This is being held at Asia’s largest offshore gaming and entertainment destination Deltin Royale, Goa. The tournament will begin from April 14th and conclude on April 19th 2022, and will be powered by Adda52.com. This tournament will host 300+ players from across the country, including some eminent pro-players from the poker community. DPT caters to buy ins from 10K for the Women’s Special to 11K for the Warmup event, followed by a 15K Bounty tournament for NL and PLO lovers and the main event for 35K followed by the High roller event of 65K.

G2G: What do you think about the current scenario of physical poker tournaments in the country after the lifting of the Covid19 regulations?

PD: With best-in-class safety protocols in place across ‘Deltin properties, we are progressing towards normalcy – of life and of our operations. The regulations and restrictions have been eased and it gives us a chance to conduct more live poker events. Everyone will be offering their best, and this, in turn, will benefit the poker enthusiasts and the larger community. I foresee a lot of small events happening in the coming few months, which will be a great thing to witness after the pandemic induced lull.

G2G: How are daily footfalls at Deltin properties. Did they breach pre-Covid levels?

PD: With the capacity restrictions lifted and tourism picking up across locations, the excitement and the buzz is back. Daily footfalls have been steadily picking up, people are travelling and getting back to doing things they love. Deltin offers an experience to remember; it is a combination of thrill, excitement, entertainment, good food & beverages and great service. To sum up, yes, things are looking up.

G2G: Now that Covid19 restrictions are lifted, what are your plans for the year ahead?

PD: To talk about poker, we plan to have more tournaments, more events, more opportunities for people to interact face to face. Players, even recreational, are willing and excited to travel so it’s the perfect time to give them good value events to look forward to! The focus of all of us at Deltin is to #upthegame so we will be introducing a lot of value additions for players, not only at DPT or at events, but also for regular playing.

G2G: What are your comments on the overall poker scenario in the country. Do you think the stigma of gambling impacts the game?

PD: I think we all know that the gaming industry is undergoing massive changes. Not only poker, I speak for all - mobile gaming, online gaming, fantasy gaming etc. Games are not just being played more, they’re being accepted more, in a good way. Poker is considered to be a game of skill, so, the mindset of it being a gamble impacts the hand, not the game process. It’s important to trust the process, and players are skilled enough to understand this.
