Cops clamp down on a gambling racket in Pune

The Hinjewadi police nabbed seven men for operating an online gambling racket from a rented flat in a residential society at 4.30 am on Friday according to a TOI report.

A team headed by sub-inspector Madhav Yelmar of the Hinjewadi police conducted a covert operation based on a tip-off. The suspects, as per the report, shouted expletives at policemen, preventing them from entering the attack. The police arrested the suspects, all aged between 18 and 30 years, and seized 17 cellphones, two laptops, and wifi routers, totally worth Rs 4.22 lakh.

The police have registered a case against them under relevant sections of the IPC and also invoked The Gambling Act against them. While the arrests have been made, the search is still on for the prime suspect. 

In a similar development, Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch and cyber police officials had earlier raided a spot in Pimpri on Friday and nabbed 13 men for running an illegal share trading racket ‘Dabba Trading’. The police confiscated 15 cellphones worth Rs1.2 lakh.

The suspects did not possess a Demat account and their trading was not registered on stock exchange. A case of criminal breach of trust has been filed. Post the passage of the Karnataka Police Amendment Bill, the police force has amped up their focus on curbing gambling activities.
