Activision, the developer of the popular Call of Duty: Vanguard game came under fire for featuring a scene that permitted players to walk over pages of the Koran, in the latest version. In some screenshots posted on Twitter, pages were shown smeared with blood. The Koran (which is also spelt as Quran and Qur’an) is the holy book of Islam.

“Call of Duty is made for everyone,” the company said in a statement. “There was insensitive content to the Muslim community mistakenly included last week and has since been removed from the game. It should never have appeared as it did in the game. We deeply apologize. We are taking immediate steps internally to address the situation to prevent such occurrences in the future.”

In 2012, the game studio removed a multiplayer map from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 after players noticed Allah’s name had been written in a bathroom mirror. The game also depicted paintings hung in the bathroom of one of the game’s maps containing a quote from the Prophet Muhammad: “Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty.” The map was removed for some time and returned after objectionable content was removed. At the time, the company said, “there was no intent to offend.”
